why is my electric bill so high

As we all know all too well, Australia’s in the middle of a real cost of living crunch – and it feels like everything’s climbing at once (because it is!). Fuel’s up, groceries are up, and why is my electric bill so high too? Because everything is!

But then you take a second look at that power bill, and it’s not just big … it’s something else entirely. Way beyond what you were expecting, way beyond last quarter, and nothing about your household has obviously changed. So you’re left staring at it, wondering what’s actually different this time, and what could possibly explain a jump like that.

We’ve heard all your questions about it, so let’s run through them and give you the answers. One or more of them could end up saving you a sizeable amount of money that you’d much rather have in your bank account these days.

1. Why is my electric bill so high with solar panels?

There’s definitely an assumption that solar means low bills, full stop. But in reality, solar only offsets what you’re using while the sun’s actually out. And in the dead of winter, it rarely is.

Also, if your household uses most of its power in the evening, when panels aren’t producing, you’re still buying most of that electricity from the grid at standard rates. Feed-in tariffs have also dropped significantly over the past few years, so exporting your excess power doesn’t offset your bill the way it used to either.

2. Why is my electric bill so high in the summer?

Air conditioning is the obvious one, and it’s a genuinely heavy draw, but it’s rarely the only factor:

  • Fridges and freezers work harder in the heat too
  • Hot water systems can work overtime if you’re in and out of the pool
  • Pool pumps, as well, tend to run longer through summer as well.

It all stacks up more than people expect sometimes.

3. Why is my first electric bill so high?

First bills are often larger than they look because they’re not really covering a normal billing cycle. They frequently include a longer period than usual, catch-up charges from an estimated reading being corrected against an actual one, and sometimes also a connection fee on top. It’s worth comparing it against your actual usage period rather than assuming it reflects a standard month or quarter.

4. Why is my electric bill so high with smart meter reading?

A smart meter itself doesn’t use more power or cost you more directly; it just makes your actual usage visible in far more detail than the old system did. But there’s a real reason so many people report their bill jumping right after installation, and it’s not a coincidence.

Some retailers automatically shift customers onto a time-of-use or demand tariff once a smart meter goes in, sometimes without making it especially clear that’s what’s happening. Under current rules, a retailer isn’t allowed to change your tariff structure for two years after installation without your consent, so if that’s happened to you, it’s worth checking your plan rather than assuming it’s just higher usage.

If it is genuinely a time-of-use tariff, the bump usually comes down to when you’re using power rather than how much. If your household runs the oven, the dryer and the aircon all in that evening peak window, a smart meter and a time-of-use plan together are simply showing you the real cost of that pattern for the first time.

5. Why is my electric bill suddenly so high?

A sudden spike, rather than a gradual climb, usually points to something specific rather than general price rises.

Could be:

  • A new appliance (particularly an inefficient older second-hand one)
  • A pool pump or hot water system that’s started running constantly instead of cycling normally
  • An appliance developing a fault and drawing power continuously.

They’re the usual suspects. This is also the scenario most worth having an electrician actually look at.

6. How to tell why my electric bill is so high?

Most retailers now offer a usage breakdown through their app or online portal, often down to the hour if you’ve got a smart meter. Comparing that against the same period last year is the quickest way to spot whether it’s genuine extra usage or something else, like a rate change on your plan.

7. How to figure out why my electric bill is so high, if usage looks normal?

If your usage graph looks roughly the same as always but the bill’s still higher, the answer is usually one of these:

  • Your plan itself
  • A rate increase
  • A changed discount
  • A move onto a less favourable tariff.

That’s a conversation for your retailer rather than an electrical issue, and it’s worth checking before assuming something’s wrong with your wiring.

How an electrician can actually help

Where this crosses into electrical territory is when usage itself looks wrong – not just the actual price of it. A licensed electrician can check your switchboard and circuits for a fault causing constant, invisible power draw, which is something that won’t show up just by looking around the house.

We can also:

  • Assess whether an ageing hot water system or old appliance is drawing far more than it should
  • Check your solar system’s actual output against what it’s rated for
  • Make sure nothing’s running when it shouldn’t be, like a circuit that’s stuck on.

If it turns out the issue really is your plan or tariff rather than anything electrical, we’ll tell you that too, rather than treating every high bill as a wiring problem.

Get it properly checked ASAP

If your bill’s seriously out of step with anything you can explain, it’s worth getting it looked at rather than just accepting it as the new normal. Get in touch with Fluid Electrical, and our licensed electricians can check your home for faults, ageing appliances or anything else drawing more than it should – so you’re not paying for a problem that’s actually fixable.
